Blog #13

For this assignment, I chose to read over my “Mega Metaphor Meaning” Essay. After underlining all the transitions, pointing terms, and repetitions, I found out some things about my writing. The first thing was the amount of contrast I use. It’s crazy how much contrast I actually incorporate into my writing. The terms “but, however, even though, and compared” are all used in my writing. Even though this essay is an argumentative essay, and it needs a lot of argument, but the way I wrote this essay just doesn’t work. To start with, I use the words “but” and “even though” way too much. This is something I didn’t realize until I went and found all the words that are repetitive. Also, What I found with my writing is I don’t use addition words enough. What this allows for is for my sentences to become choppy with broken up statements, and then countered with a monster amount of arguments. This just breaks up the flow of what is happening in the essay, and it can also cause confusion for the reader. However, having a bunch of transitions isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I think it’s a good thing to have a lot of contrast transitions, but used the wrong way can affect flow. An even balance of transitions is the way to go. For example, I used the terms, “especially” for elaboration, “therefore” for cause and effect, and “at the end of the day” for conclusion. There is a wide variety of transitions I use, but contrast still outweighs them all by far. For something as important as addition terms, I need to find a way to use them more.
