It’s amazing how important language really is to humans. I’t something we take for granted because we never think about what the world would be without it. The level of communication we have today would be nothing compared to what we have now. Even today, humans are still re-inventing words, and this is to work with technology to re-invent language. “Lol” is the greatest example of this. “Lol” and is the Webster Dictionary, and we all know that it means “laugh out loud.” Language is growing and changing the future, and humans must be able to keep up with this new world of language. If not, they will fall behind, and fall behind in more than just, “21st Century way of talking.” Language is super complicated and it’s almost essential to humans. However, what comes with this is the, good, bad and ugly. Let’s start with the good. There are ALOT of good things about English. The biggest positive that comes from language is thought. The podcast hit on this, and we did this in class as well. Ask yourself, “What is thought?” Thinking is the process of using one’s mind to consider or reason about something. But then, how do you reason? You reason by putting words together to create an understanding, a thought. The podcast uses the example, a blue wall, and the word left. These are two different words, but more importantly, two different types of ideas. When you say, “The dog is to the left of the blue wall,” you’re combing pieces of language to create thinking. Now this isn’t just for children who start thinking. Every human does this every single day. Albert Einstein is the same exact way. It’s a matter of “putting the pieces together.” Now let’s take a look at the bad. Even though humans need language, they however, become dependent on language. In the podcast, this lady said she lost her voice and could no longer remember words. she explained how she felt empty and silent. Even though she didn’t mind it, it’s a major struggle to get back into society and understand again. Imagine being 25 years old, and you suddenly loose all your words. Not only would you become less educated, you would fall behind and would have to re-learn what you should’ve already have known. It’s sad to say, but you fall out of society without words. Now for the ugly of language. Language can also be mean. It can be really mean. Like we talked about at the beginning of the year, metaphors have a lot of meaning. They carry so much power, and mean so much then you would ever think. However, wonder if that was turned into a hateful metaphor towards someone. Some people would use language for bullying, and people can become depressed from it. Yes, language can be really intense, but it can always be for a bad way too.
