Thesis: Even though society looks to be spiraling downhill with the takeover of teen vaping, being able to connect with the arts may be able to revamp society, and turn things back around.

Claim 1: My first claim is going to be very simple. I am going to use the essay’s own arguments to support the fact that by using art, scientists will be able to understand vaping better, and make new devices that will get people to stop vaping. Or better yet, m are a clean vape. The best way to make things better in society is to innovate. Both Ma and Lehrer talk a lot about this.

Claim 2: I believe the next claim should be about informing people, and making people smarter about the subject; obviously this being vaping. Teens are stupid. We all know this. It’s because they don’t truly know the consequences. But even when they are told the consequences in health class, they don’t care to listen because powerpoint are meaningless to them. I am going to use Lehrer’s argument of metaphors and explain how great connections can be drawn with using them. I can also refer back to our original essays on metaphors and use that in my argument as well. The main argument will be that the art of metaphors can be a better explanation for the consequences of vaping for teens.

Claim 3: Vaping can also be addictive to people, and teens will struggle to quit once they are addicted. This is where Ma’s “Equilibrium” argument will come handy. When people try to quit vaping, they will struggle severely, and they. will start to question why they should even quit. Ma argues that arts can help people cope “with these issues by engaging, not avoiding, the deep emotions of intimate loss involved and retelling over and over again the story of the human condition and its limits.” This claim is going to need to be supported greatly to connect with the thesis, but it can work.

  • Excellent. I love how you plan to use Ma’s “Equilibrium” argument.

As I suggested in Blog #17, you might consider expanding on ideas of how to empower young people with the “wisdom” to reject things such as vaping.
