Have you ever heard of the saying, “Take it with a grain of salt?” This saying is used to tell be to take things less serious, or take it as exaggerated. However, it may be harder to take something with a grain of salt than people originally thought. People completely underestimate the power of words, and what effect the English language can have one someone. Every time we talk to someone, or we are in a conversation, endless words, comparisons, arguments, and ideas are made, yet people don’t even realize. This just scraps the surface of what the English language can do. The language of metaphors creates a whole new spectrum of what the English language can do, even though people may not think it, metaphors can affect a person both mentally and physically. Metaphors are all around us, and authors fill their writings with them to give great meaning and feelings to their words. Metaphors can take sentences and ideas to a whole new level, and it allows people to connect with what the other is saying. Metaphors can stop a reader, and put them into a conversation with what they are reading. Readers can get emotional from what they are experiencing, and in turn, can effect their mental and physical state. Have you ever watched a motivational video that changed the way you were feeling? Think about what that video motivation had in it to do this to you. Was there music, or cool sound effects, or maybe just cool video and editing? But chances are that video had words in it. Words can hit someone like a tsunami, rushing into your mind, filling it with new idea, emotion, comparisons, and in the end, changing the way you were feeling. Along with this change in feeling, it can change how a person thinks about something as well. All these ideas of how the English language is made more complex with metaphors, and how metaphors can change a person’s thoughts, feelings, or physical state can all be supported by the TED talk of James Geary, the metaphor designer, Michael Erard, and the doctor, Dhruv Khullar. These men break down the significance of a metaphor, and the intricate process and structure of what goes into making a metaphor; and trust me, it’s a far more pain-staking process than I ever thought it would be. On top of that, they show us the power a metaphor can posses, and the effects it can have on the audience.
